What we do

Most tax bills are decided long before the return is filed. By April the year is closed and the options are gone. That is why this work runs all year, not as one appointment in spring.

We prepare business and individual returns for clients in Trumbull and across Connecticut, and remotely for clients further out. Where we also keep the books, the return is built from records we already know are reconciled, which removes most of the back and forth that makes tax season painful.

Alongside the returns, we handle quarterly estimated payments and sales tax filing, and we plan ahead so you are not finding out what you owe at the same moment you have to pay it.

What tax preparation and filing includes

The full scope, in plain terms. Ask about any one of these on its own or all of them together.

Business tax return preparation

Returns prepared for the entity you actually have, built from the year's records as they were kept.

Individual tax return preparation

Personal returns, including the ones that get complicated because you own a business.

Estimated tax payments and quarterly filings

Quarterly estimates worked out and filed, so the year does not end in a surprise.

Tax planning and strategy

Looking ahead while the year is still open and decisions can still change the outcome.

Sales tax filing and compliance

Connecticut sales tax tracked and filed on schedule, so a due date does not become a notice.

How it works

Documents come in through a secure portal. We prepare the return, and where something looks unusual we ask about it first.

You see the return and get a plain explanation of what drove the number before anything is filed. After filing, planning for the next year starts while there is still a year left to plan in. If we also keep your books, most of this happens in the background and tax season stops being an event.

Who tax preparation is for

  • Connecticut business owners who file both a business and a personal return
  • Owners whose current preparer only appears in March
  • Businesses that collect sales tax in Connecticut
  • Anyone paying quarterly estimates and guessing at the amount

What does business tax preparation include?

Business tax preparation is the return for the entity you actually have, prepared from the year's books, plus the owner's personal return wherever the business profit is reported on it. Total BizSolutions prepares both, along with the quarterly estimated payments for the year ahead, so the returns and the estimates agree with each other.

Where we also keep the books, the return is built from records we already know are reconciled. If your books are behind, catch-up bookkeeping brings them current first, so the return is not prepared from guesses. Bookkeeping and taxes from one firm compares that setup with a separate bookkeeper and tax preparer.

Which tax return does my business file?

That depends on how the business is classified for federal tax. A sole proprietor reports business profit on Schedule C with Form 1040, a partnership files Form 1065 and gives each partner a Schedule K-1, an S corporation files Form 1120-S and a C corporation files Form 1120.

An LLC is not a tax category of its own. The IRS treats an LLC as a corporation, a partnership or part of its owner's return, and an LLC with at least two members is classified as a partnership unless it files Form 8832 to be treated as a corporation. A single-member LLC is disregarded by default, so if its owner is an individual its activity generally goes on the owner's own return, such as Schedule C. Which of these applies to your business is worth confirming on a first call, because it decides which forms the year needs.

What should I have ready for a business tax return?

Have the year's books closed through December, last year's business and personal returns, and every IRS or Connecticut letter that is still open. Those three show what the business earned, how it is classified and what is outstanding.

Alongside them, gather the bank and credit card statements for the year, the payroll year-end reports, the 1099s you issued or received, a record of any estimated payments already made, and a list of larger purchases such as equipment or a vehicle. If you paid contractors, the 1099 deadline checklist covers who needs a form. Documents come in through the secure client portal, and an open notice goes to tax resolution and IRS help so its due date does not run out while the return is prepared.

How much does business tax preparation cost?

There is no published fee for a tax return, so ask for a quote on a first call. The only published price is for monthly work such as bookkeeping, payroll and monthly accounting, which is priced starting at $500/month, and that figure does not apply to a one-off return.

The pricing page sets out what the starting price covers and what it does not.

Can you prepare my business taxes if I am not in Connecticut?

Yes. The office is in Trumbull, Connecticut, and Total BizSolutions serves small businesses throughout the United States, with documents moving through a secure client portal.

What changes with the address is the state paperwork around the federal return, so say on the first call where the business operates and where its owners live. How remote bookkeeping works with us covers the first call, the portal and access to your books.

Tax Preparation and Filing FAQs

Do you do personal returns as well as business ones?

Yes, and for most business owners the two belong together. A personal return that ignores what happened in the business is a return that is guessing.

When should I start thinking about next year's taxes?

While this year is still open. Once the year closes, a preparer is reporting history. The useful conversations happen before that.

How do I get my documents to you?

Through a secure client portal rather than email attachments.

Do you handle Connecticut sales tax?

Yes, sales tax filing and compliance is part of the service.
