The 2026 1099 deadline checklist for small businesses
What to collect before January, which payments belong on a 1099, and the dates that move into February and March 2027.
When are 2026 Forms 1099 due?
Total BizSolutions LLC in Trumbull helps small businesses keep contractor records current and prepare year-end 1099s. For payments made during 2026, Form 1099-NEC is due to the recipient and the IRS on January 31, 2027. Because that date is a Sunday, the deadline moves to Monday, February 1, 2027. Form 1099-MISC recipient statements also move to February 1; filing with the IRS is due March 1 on paper or March 31 electronically. Monthly payroll work starts at $500/month. Call (267) 710-6742, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
Start with the vendor list, not the forms
A clean 1099 filing starts before January. Pull every person or business you paid for services during 2026, total the payments by vendor, and separate payments made by check, cash, ACH or direct deposit from payments made by credit card or a third-party payment network. The payment settlement company, rather than your business, generally handles the latter on Form 1099-K.
For tax years beginning after 2025, the IRS instructions raise the reporting threshold for certain payments from $600 to $2,000. That makes the 2026 vendor totals especially important. It does not turn an employee into a contractor, and issuing a 1099 does not decide worker status.
Get a completed Form W-9 from each contractor before the first payment when possible. The W-9 gives you the payee name and taxpayer identification number needed for the form. If a W-9 is still missing, ask for it now rather than during the last week of January.
The dates for 2026 payments
These are the federal dates in the IRS's December 2026 instructions. State filing requirements can be different.
| Task | Federal deadline | What to have ready |
|---|---|---|
| Give Form 1099-NEC to the recipient | February 1, 2027 | Legal name, address, taxpayer ID and 2026 nonemployee compensation |
| File Form 1099-NEC with the IRS | February 1, 2027 | The same recipient data, plus your business information and filing method |
| Give Form 1099-MISC to the recipient | February 1, 2027 | The correct payment type and total for 2026 |
| File Form 1099-MISC on paper | March 1, 2027 | The forms and the paper transmittal required for your filing |
| File Form 1099-MISC electronically | March 31, 2027 | An approved electronic filing method and complete payer and payee records |
Six checks before you file
Confirm worker status
Decide whether the person is truly an independent contractor or an employee before choosing a form. A W-2 or 1099 reports the relationship; it does not create it.
Collect every W-9
Match the name and taxpayer identification number on the W-9 to the vendor record. Keep the W-9 in your files rather than sending it with the 1099.
Total the right payments
Add payments made in the course of the business. Keep personal payments out, and separate card or third-party network payments that fall under Form 1099-K reporting.
Use the 2026 threshold
For 2026, the IRS instructions use a $2,000 threshold for nonemployee compensation and several other reportable payment types. Check the specific form instructions before excluding a vendor.
Check the electronic filing rule
If you must file at least 10 covered information returns in total during the calendar year, the IRS generally requires electronic filing. The count is aggregated across return types.
Review names, numbers and delivery
A missing digit can create two separate problems: an incorrect return to the IRS and an incorrect statement to the recipient. Review both copies before they go out.
How 1099 preparation works with us
- 1
We review the vendor list
We identify the people and businesses that may need a form and flag missing records before filing week.
- 2
You supply missing W-9s
You request any missing legal names, addresses and taxpayer identification numbers from the payees.
- 3
We reconcile the totals
The vendor totals are checked against the books, with card and third-party network payments separated from direct business payments.
- 4
The forms are prepared and filed
The recipient statements and IRS filing are prepared from the reviewed records. Ask which state filings apply to your business.

Questions about 2026 Forms 1099
Did the 1099 threshold change for 2026?
Yes. The IRS's December 2026 instructions say the reporting threshold for certain payments, including nonemployee compensation, increased to $2,000 for tax years beginning after 2025. Check the instructions for the payment type because some rules use a different threshold.
Do credit card payments go on Form 1099-NEC?
Generally, no. The IRS instructions say payment card and certain third-party network transactions are reported by the payment settlement entity on Form 1099-K, rather than by the business on Form 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC.
What if January 31 falls on a weekend?
The deadline moves to the next business day. January 31, 2027 is a Sunday, so the 2026 Form 1099-NEC deadline moves to Monday, February 1, 2027.
Do I have to file electronically?
If you are required to file at least 10 covered information returns in total during the calendar year, the IRS generally requires electronic filing. The total is aggregated across return types.
Can Total BizSolutions prepare both payroll forms and 1099s?
Yes. Payroll processing includes year-end W-2 and 1099 preparation. Monthly payroll work starts at $500/month; ask for your own scope and figure on the first call.
